In 2020-21 we...
In 2020-21, the A+ Student VOICES Team made great strides to begin addressing the need for increased student voice in education decisions. Over a span of nine months, we created a student survey gauging students' experiences amid COVID-19, used survey results to create a group op-ed, shared our own perspectives, and used these experiences to relay the concerns of our team members and students alike to decision-makers.
Met with Education Officials
In May 2021, A+SVT members met with State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey, State Representative Terri Collins, and State Board of Education member Cynthia McCarty to discuss the results of our student survey. We proposed an official student advisory council for education officials to begin addressing the concerns of students statewide such as mental health and the lack of student representation in education decisions.
The A+ Student VOICES Team 2020-2021 Student Survey provided striking feedback from Alabama students about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. From 80% of students wanting to be involved in a student group apart from Student Government Association (SGA) to more than half of respondents not feeling comfortable addressing their mental health with a school counselor, our survey represented the perspectives of 170 students statewide.
Based on our 2020-21 Student Survey results, our Team wrote an op-ed discussing the frustrations of Alabama high school students amid COVID-19. In our op-ed, we addressed topics such as school impact on student mental health and lack of resources, COVID-19 safety concerns, online learning experience, and lack of student input on education decisions.
A few of our team members collaborated with the Alabama Education Lab to share their experiences throughout the 2020-21 school year for AL Ed Lab's first-person student perspectives project. We shared photos, videos, and written pieces depicting our journey through the school year, including struggles with mental health and the shift in our typical school routines such as extracurriculars and social events.
2021 Student Survey Results
This survey was created by Alabama high school students on the A+ Student VOICES Team to survey our peers on their feelings and experiences with their schools amid COVID-19. All responses were anonymous. These survey results was shared with lawmakers and other people in charge of making education decisions in the state.
