Expanding Access to Opportunity: Annie’s Advocacy Project

Across Alabama, student advocates from the A+ Student VOICES Team (SVT) are stepping up to address some of the most pressing issues in education. Among them is Annie, a dedicated student leader who recognized that many students are unaware of the opportunities available to them both within their communities and beyond. Determined to make these resources more accessible, Annie launched an initiative designed to connect students with programs and experiences that can support their personal, academic, and professional growth.

After noticing that many students lacked awareness of scholarships, volunteer opportunities, leadership programs, and other valuable experiences, Annie realized there was a need for a centralized resource where students could easily explore opportunities that matched their interests. She understood that access to information can often be a barrier to participation, especially for students who may not have strong networks or readily available guidance.

To address this need, Annie created Alabama Student Opportunities, a website that serves as a comprehensive hub for students seeking opportunities both locally and globally. The platform features information on a wide range of programs, including volunteer opportunities, leadership experiences, summer programs, and resources for both current high school students and recent graduates. By bringing these opportunities together in one accessible location, Annie has made it easier for students to discover experiences that can help shape their futures.

Recognizing the importance of broad access, Annie shared the website throughout her own network and encouraged students to spread the word among their peers. She also worked to ensure that students outside of her immediate community could benefit from the resource by distributing it to schools beyond her county, expanding its reach across Alabama.
