Across Alabama, student advocates from A+ Education Partnership’s Student VOICES Team (SVT) are stepping up to address some of the most pressing issues facing students today. Among them is Alivia, a passionate advocate who dedicated her project to promoting mental health awareness and encouraging her peers to prioritize their well-being.

Alivia recognized that many students at her school were struggling with stress and burnout, particularly because of the rigorous demands of the school's high-achieving fine arts magnet program. She often heard classmates talk about lacking motivation, staying up late to complete projects, or feeling overwhelmed by balancing academics with rehearsals, performances, and extracurricular commitments. Seeing these challenges firsthand inspired Alivia to take action and create meaningful change within her school community.

Initially, Alivia envisioned setting aside time during the school day for mental health breaks, allowing students to catch up on assignments, decompress, or simply take a moment to recharge. However, school administrators expressed concerns about supervision and the potential loss of instructional time, making the proposal difficult to implement.

Determined to continue advocating for her peers, Alivia explored other options. She next proposed organizing a mental health awareness assembly or pep rally to educate students and encourage open conversations about well-being. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts and previously planned school events prevented this idea from moving forward, and many student organizations were already focused on their own initiatives.

Despite these obstacles, Alivia refused to give up. Working closely with her vice principal, guidance counselor, and student government leaders, she identified an opportunity to incorporate mental health awareness into the school's existing awards ceremonies. Through this collaboration, Alivia helped bring a guest speaker to address students about mental health, resilience, and managing demanding schedules. The speaker encouraged students to seek support when needed and emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between achievement and personal well-being.

Although her original plans evolved throughout the process, Alivia considers her advocacy project a success. In fact, her efforts resulted in a lasting legacy at her school. Moving forward, each awards ceremony will include a speaker who addresses mental health and student wellness, ensuring that future students continue to hear messages of encouragement and support.

Alivia’s advocacy demonstrates the power of persistence and the importance of prioritizing student well-being. Her work serves as a reminder that meaningful change often requires flexibility, collaboration, and determination. Through her efforts, she has created a lasting impact that will continue to inspire students to seek support, prioritize their mental health, and care for themselves and others.
