In June, the A+ Student Voices Team (SVT) traveled to Washington, D.C. for a summer advocacy trip with our junior and senior members, giving students the chance to share their perspective at the national level while soaking in the history and energy of the nation's capital.
SVT members met with Sen. Katie Britt, Rep. Shomari Figures, and Rep. Barry Moore and their staff to share the results of our statewide student survey and advocate for stronger support for Alabama's students. They spoke about student mental health, school culture, the quality of instruction and student support, and the importance of including students in conversations that shape education policy. Walking into these meetings prepared and speaking with confidence, our students showed just how ready they are to lead.
Alongside their advocacy meetings, students explored some of the most iconic sites in Washington. They visited several Smithsonian museums, the Supreme Court building, the National Archives, and numerous monuments and memorials. From seeing the Constitution up close to walking the National Mall, students connected classroom learning with real-world history and civic engagement.
This trip is one of SVT's most meaningful traditions. It's a reminder that student voices matter, and that our students have the power to shape the future of education in Alabama. We're proud of their leadership, their curiosity, and their commitment to making schools better for every student in our state.
