Across Alabama, student advocates from the A+ Student VOICES Team (SVT) are stepping up to address some of the most pressing issues in education. Among them is Kate, a dedicated student leader who recognized a growing challenge within her school community: many students were struggling with low energy, declining motivation, and a lack of enthusiasm for academics. Determined to make a difference, Kate developed an initiative focused on improving student well-being and encouraging a more positive mindset throughout the school day.

After noticing the stress and fatigue many students experienced while balancing demanding schedules, Kate began exploring simple lifestyle changes that could positively influence students’ attitudes, energy levels, and academic performance. Rather than allowing busy schedules and academic pressures to discourage students, she wanted to help her peers develop habits that would empower them to approach challenges with confidence and resilience.

Motivated by both research and the example set by some of her most enthusiastic peers, Kate began collecting information on healthy habits that support student success. She carefully reviewed research studies and compiled evidence-based strategies related to sleep, screen time, motivation, and overall wellness. Through this process, she identified practical habits that could help students improve both their mental and physical well-being while fostering a more positive approach to school.

Wanting to better understand what contributes to student success, Kate also interviewed classmates who had already established strong routines and personal goals. By learning about the habits these students practiced, she gained valuable insight into how accomplished students think, manage their time, and maintain motivation. She combined these firsthand perspectives with her research findings to create Honing Your Habits, a website designed to provide students with realistic, accessible strategies for improving their daily lives.

The website has been well received by students, many of whom appreciate its engaging and informative approach. Rather than presenting information in a lecture-style format, Honing Your Habits uses a problem-and-solution framework that helps students identify unhealthy habits and explore practical ways to make positive changes. Students have shared that they value the site's realistic recommendations, reward systems, and emphasis on habits that are directly relevant to their everyday experiences.

Through her advocacy, Kate has demonstrated that small changes can lead to meaningful improvements in student well-being and academic success. Her project serves as a powerful reminder that healthy habits can shape not only how students perform in school, but also how they approach challenges in all areas of life. Kate’s work is an inspiring example of student leadership and the positive impact one advocate can have on an entire school community.
