Letters of Encouragement: Emilia’s Advocacy Project

Across Alabama, student advocates from A+ Education Partnership’s Student VOICES Team (SVT) are stepping up to strengthen school communities and support student success. Among them is Emilia McDonald, a dedicated advocate from Jackson High School, who launched a meaningful initiative focused on easing the transition into high school for incoming freshmen.

Understanding that starting high school can often feel overwhelming and uncertain, Emilia created a project centered on connection, encouragement, and peer support. Her initiative invited graduating seniors to write personal letters to incoming freshmen, offering advice, reassurance, and reflections based on their own high school experiences.

Through these letters, seniors shared valuable lessons they learned about academics, friendships, extracurricular involvement, and personal growth. Many students used the opportunity to encourage freshmen to step outside of their comfort zones, get involved in school activities, and remember that challenges are a natural part of growing and learning.

By creating a space for honest and supportive communication between students, Emilia’s project helped foster a stronger sense of belonging within the school community. The letters were designed to remind incoming freshmen that they are not alone as they begin this new chapter and that a network of support is already in place to help them succeed.

In addition to supporting freshmen, the initiative also provided graduating seniors with an opportunity to reflect on their own high school journeys and leave behind words of encouragement for the next generation of students at Jackson High School. This exchange strengthened connections across grade levels and reinforced the importance of students supporting one another.
