Across Alabama, student advocates from the A+ Student VOICES Team (SVT) are stepping up to address some of the most pressing issues facing students today. Among them is Trinity Watts-Nuckles from Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School, who created a Mental Wellness Month 3-Day Series to increase awareness of mental health resources and encourage seniors to prioritize their well-being.
Trinity was inspired to launch this initiative after recognizing that many students, including herself, did not always have access to the mental health support and resources they needed within Montgomery Public Schools. She observed that school counselors were often balancing numerous responsibilities, including college readiness, testing, and academic advising, leaving limited time to address students' mental health needs. As seniors prepare to transition into life after high school, Trinity wanted to ensure that her peers understood that their mental health matters and that seeking help is both important and encouraged.
Working closely with the Montgomery Public Schools Mental Health Coordinator and community partners, Trinity organized a three-day series focused on wellness, encouragement, and self-care. The initiative provided students with opportunities to learn about mental health in a welcoming and supportive environment while connecting them with valuable resources.
The series featured a variety of activities designed to engage and support students. One event, TyTalks with Shatara Clark, included a virtual discussion centered on mental wellness, during which students participated in meaningful conversations and received autographed books. Another day focused on distributing free wellness kits through Student Support Services, providing students with tools and resources to encourage healthy coping strategies and self-care practices. The final event, Art Perspectives & Motivational Moments, gave students the opportunity to hear inspirational messages while expressing themselves creatively through art.
Through this project, Trinity sought to create more open conversations surrounding mental health while helping students feel seen, supported, and encouraged during an important stage in their lives. She hopes that the impact of Mental Wellness Month will continue long after the events conclude, reminding students that they are not alone and that support and resources are available to help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
Trinity’s advocacy project highlights the powerful role students can play in fostering positive change within their school communities. By using her voice and personal experiences to support others, she created an initiative that promotes awareness, connection, and compassion among her peers. Her work serves as a meaningful example of youth leadership and the lasting impact one student can have.
